This ‘double’ film imagines the correspondence between writer Pamela Carter’s two grandmothers, Chia Miau Lang in Singapore and Phyllis Carter in Lancaster. Both were born around the turn of the 20th century but never met one another in real life.
Carter explores colonial heritage and mixed-race identity by offering two digital journeys using photographs inherited from her parents. The title of the project takes its name from the optical illusion in which a single image can be interpreted as a duck or a rabbit but you can’t ever see both at once.

Pamela Carter is a playwright, librettist and dramaturg, who approaches writing for performance as a way of bringing together stories, actors, technologies and audiences . Her work has been produced in the UK and internationally since 2004. She is currently under commission to The Royal Court. Her plays include: Them! (National Theatre of Scotland); LINES (The Yard Theatre, London/Bakehouse Theatre, Adelaide); Fast Ganz Nah/Almost Near (Theater Dresden); Skåne (Hampstead Theatre; winner of the New Writing Commission at the Berliner Festspiele Stückemarkt in 2012); What We Know (Traverse Theatre); Sophocles’ Antigone (University of South Florida).
Digital Filmmaker: Christine 挺欢 Urquhart
Christine 挺欢 Urquhart is a former Fine Art Painter and Sculptor working in Theatre and Film as a Set & Costume Designer and Art Director. She is Taiwanese / English born though spent 7 years of her career abroad seeking new forms of performance (Bulgaria, New Zealand, Australia, Canada) and is currently based in Glasgow, Scotland. Her work questions viewpoints and narrative structure and form, the body as a political statement, the audience as witnesses and is responsive to space as a Design Provocateur. She was most recently Dora Nominated (Canada) for an Outstanding Costume Design and for an Outstanding Set Design.
Sound: Nick Powell
Nick Powell is a British musician, composer and sound designer. His varied career has seen him cut between working with bands, orchestras, film scores, artworks and theatre shows as well as scoring largescale outdoor events. He has worked on theatre productions worldwide, including the West End and on Broadway, and for companies including the National Theatre, the RSC, the National Theatre of Scotland, the Royal Court Theatre, and the Donmar Warehouse.
The third of CAN’s six digital commissions, this work is co-commissioned by Yellow Earth Theatre.
