About
An augmented reality tour of Chinatown led by artist and app creator, Donald Shek
“The territory no longer precedes the map, nor does it survive it.”
Simulacra and Simulation, Jean Baudrillard.
Augmented Chinatown maps the streets of the current Chinatown from Rupert St. to Charing Cross Rd. The tour will be led by artist Donald Shek, combining video installation and digital sculptures with insights into the past and future of Chinatown. Donald will share the layered histories of the area, the Chinese community and the Chinese diaspora, exploring the themes of identity, cultural symbolism and myth. The tour takes audience members through each of the digital installations from the early beginnings of the creation myth in Chinese mythology to the present day. Augmented Chinatown will bring new light to these stories and their links to other cultures such as the Tower of Babel, Prometheus and the Elysian Fields.
The tour will be accessible via an iPhone app, available to download here. Due to the size of the app (587mb) we strongly recommend that you download the app on WIFI prior to joining the tour. Once downloaded the app does not use any data.
With thanks to Guanghwa Bookshop. If you are unable to make any of the tour times, you can still pick up a map of the installations from Guanghwa Bookshop.
